Treating dark under eye circles
In this article, we discuss the causes and treatment for dark under-eye circles.
What causes dark under eyes?
There are many causes for dark under eye circles, some of which include:
Fatigue
Sleep deprivation adds additional stress to our bodies and can also drain the colour out of our skin, meaning our blood vessels look darker than they normally would. As well as this, lack of sleep can cause fluid build-up which makes eyes look puffy and can make the dark circles even more noticeable.
Allergies
It may be an allergy causing dark under eye circles as during an allergic reaction, your body releases histamines to respond to harmful bacteria. These histamines can sometimes dilate our blood vessels which will make them more visible underneath our skin, creating dark under eye circles.
Dehydration
Dehydration can cause dark under circles. This is because if the skin does not have enough water to pull from our skin cells – it can shrink and begin to look sunken.
Sun exposure
If your skin is getting to much sun, it can cause an excess production of melanin – this is the pigment that provides skin colour. Overexposure to the sun can darken the skin around the eyes.
Genetics
Dark circles can be hereditary, meaning we can be genetically predisposed to them.
