“See my true colours and remove my true colours”

The Solihull Medical Cosmetic Clinic is proud to introduce the new and exclusive Pico laser to the Midlands. Unlike cheaper ND:Yag machines which only remove certain colours of tattoo at lower energy requiring sometimes up to 20 treatments or more, the Pico laser is considered the gold standard in laser tattoo removal in the world. We are the first clinic in Birmingham to offer this exclusive treatment as a major referral centre for people who have been disappointed with tattoo removal results from salons and tattoo parlours. So far we have already had many patients contact us in the Midlands who would have otherwise had to travel to other parts of the country paying expensive prices for treatment. Now we can bring the technology closer to home.

Medical Evidence:

A study carried out in America using Pico laser and Nano laser for tattoo removal

The researchers found the picosecond laser cleared tattoos faster than the nanosecond technology. Red, yellow and orange pigments seemed to respond best to the 532 nm picosecond laser, with 75% to 100% clearance after an average of two treatments in most cases. Seven tattoos containing black ink responded equally well after one to two treatments to the 755 nm and 1064 nm picosecond lasers. One treatment resulted in 75% clearance of the red pigment in nine tattoos. In two of the people studied, the red pigment was gone after three treatments.

What is Picosecond?

Picosecond is the first of a new generation of aesthetic lasers that don’t rely solely on heat to burn or melt away unwanted tattoo ink or melanin, the pigment that causes dark spots in your skin.

Instead, Picosecond engineers used cutting-edge physics and medical science to help practitioners treat patients in a new way. Instead of building up heat, Picosecond delivers energy so rapidly (in trillionths of a second) that tiny particles that make up pigment and tattoo ink vibrate and shatter, without burning surrounding tissue. Less heat means less tissue damage and discomfort.

Advantages of Picosecond Technology over Traditional Laser Tattoo Removal

Picosecond laser technology can be used to treat multicoloured tattoos on different skin types. Unlike traditional lasers, it delivers super-short pulses of energy measured in picoseconds to the targeted ink. Traditional laser treatments are associated with:

  • Limitations on tattoo colours and types that can be treated
  •  Discomfort during treatment
  •  Ineffectiveness in breaking up ink particles
  •  Certain risks associated with the treatment, particularly with darker skin tones

Picosecond tattoo removal has several advantages over traditional laser treatments:

  • It produces fast results with high-power, concentrated energy delivered in ultra-fast pulses to shatter ink particles so the body can clear them.
  • It provides better results for different skin types in a few treatments.
  • As the energy pulses are so fast, patients experience minimal discomfort during treatment.
  • Advanced picosecond technology minimizes risk, as the energy is delivered optimally to the ink particles in ultra-short pulses, while the least amount of heat goes into the skin.

Tattoo Removal Procedure with the Picosecond Laser Technology

First, a numbing agent is applied if the patient desires it for more comfortable treatment. Then the Pico laser handpiece is used in the treatment area to deliver high-power laser energy in picosecond pulses precisely to the ink particles. The energy pulses shatter the ink particles into tiny fragments, most of which are later naturally eliminated by the body. The skin is constantly monitored to keep it cool and comfortable from the beginning to the end of the procedure.

This method selectively treats the tattoo without causing damage to the surrounding skin. With less heat generated, the treatment is safer with fewer side effects. Patients may experience temporary skin reddening or discoloration around the treatment site or a temporary lightening of the skin in the area. These symptoms typically resolve and the skin returns to a normal tone.

Tattoos can be removed in a single treatment, although complete removal may require additional treatments. Certain ink colours may require more treatments to remove than others, although treatments will still be fewer with picosecond laser technology, with fewer resulting side effects.

Further Pico Laser Tattoo Removal FAQs

Tattoo ink is injected under the skin, into the dermis (the thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis) where it is less accessible. The larger the ink particle size, the more difficult it is to remove. Traditional laser treatments break up ink particles to make it easier for the body to get rid of them, but after multiple treatments, the ink particles may still be too large for the body to eliminate.

Certain colours, such as reds and yellows, are more difficult to remove than blues and blacks. Darker skin tones are more difficult to treat with traditional lasers because more of the energy is absorbed into the skin rather than the ink particles. This increases the risk involved in treating individuals with darker skin.

The Pico laser targets light at colours matching a specific laser wavelength in picosecond pulses that shatter tattoo ink into tiny particles. The body can easily remove these particles through natural processes. The Picolaser emits less heat energy than traditional lasers, which makes it a safer, more comfortable treatment with fewer side effects for patients, including those with darker skin tones.

Pico laser tattoo removal uses a picosecond (one-trillionth of a second) pulse durations to generate super-high powered laser energy, focused directly on the ink of your tattoo. This strong photo-mechanical impact optimizes the fracturing of tattoo ink – simply meaning your unwanted tattoos will be virtually zapped into vapour.

Reduction of tattoo with treatment. Laser tattoo removal requires multiple treatment sessions. The number of treatments will depend on the quality and depth of your tattoo application, the type of ink used in the tattoo, the colour used and the length of time between each treatment. Indian ink graphite tattoos are the easiest to remove with laser treatments. Professional tattoos usually require 5-8 treatments, whilst amateur tattoos generally require 1-3 treatments, all spaced approximately six weeks apart.

Difficult colours are yellow, green and aqua. Red and black are the easiest colours to remove. In most cases, greater than 95% fading of the tattoo may be achieved with laser tattoo removal. More than one hundred tattoo inks are available worldwide today. Sometimes not knowing which tattoo ink was used, how much and how deep can make it difficult to predict the number of treatments required for laser removal of a tattoo.

This new technology enables us to treat any skin colour and any colour tattoo more efficiently in less time and with significantly less discomfort than traditional tattoo removal methods. Although certain ink colours are a bit more challenging and may require more treatments, the Pico Laser still requires less treatments overall, resulting in fewer complications and side effects.

Your tattoos can be removed in a single treatment, although oftentimes require three to six treatments for complete removal. Although it is not possible to fully erase your tattoo, the Pico Laser will significantly diminish the appearance of your tattoo. Once the area has healed completely and as expected, you can tattoo in that same location with no repercussions from the previous tattoo.

While your anticipation of pain can differ from other patients, rest assured there is only minimal discomfort during the removal process. Patients that have sensitive skin or feel they may experience discomfort find relief from a topical anaesthetic applied 30-60 minutes before the treatment session.

This strategy allows for constant monitoring of your skin from the beginning of your treatment until the very last picosecond, keeping your skin's temperature cool and comfortable.

The risk of scarring is less than 5% and is usually limited to a portion of the treated area. Local and systemic allergic reactions to the ink are possible, with red ink being the usual culprit. Side effects of laser tattoo removal using the Q-switched laser are usually transient and include pigmentary and textural changes. Hyperpigmentation is usually mild and transient and can be treated with topical bleaching creams. Hypopigmentation is also usually transient, but de-pigmentation occurs in about 1% of cases, often permanent. Skin irritation may last a week or so.

Depending on the size of your tattoo and how many sessions you will need to remove it will determine your cost. During your consultation, Dr Sagoo can provide you with an accurate price for your tattoo removal session. Each person shall need a different treatment programme based on the size and colour of the tattoo.

Pico laser has become the new gold standard for treating melasma and pigment.  This may be the most powerful laser for pigmentation as a lot more energy can be delivered in very short time intervals where minimal collateral skin damage may occur.

Pico laser also treats most skin imperfections, such as age spots, sun spots and acne scars.  Pico technology offers the most advanced laser treatment that is proven to be faster, safer and highly effective in selectively destroying under-skin discolorations and promoting elastin production.
