Specialist Acne Scar Treatments
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions that affects around 95% of younger adults and can also continue into adulthood for about 3% of people. They are commonly characterized by inflamed pimples (pustules), plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads) and deeper lumps (nodules), and they can occur in many areas of the body, including the face, chest, and back.
They usually clear up after some years due to normal body hormones, but the main concern is about the scars they may let if not correctly treated. That is why, there are several types of acne scar treatments available and, here at Solihull Medical Cosmetic Clinic, we offer some great options for all skin types.
Types of Acne Scarring
Acne has different grades, where the mildest form (grade 1) is characterized by blackheads on the nose and some small whiteheads on the chest. The most severe one for its time (grade 4), which is quite rare, consists of skin covered with numerous pustules and swelling.
Therefore, each skin will react differently, and this may lead to different types of acne scarring. These may include:
-
Rolling scars
Caused by damage on the surface of the skin, the rolling scars are distensible and have sloping edges, being shallow and wide.
-
Ice Pick Scars
They have a ‘punchable’ appearance and are most common on the cheek area. They are caused by cyst infections or other deep inflamed skin tissue.
-
Box Scars
Box scars remember the look of chickenpox scars. They may vary from shallow to deep and from punch to out.
-
Post-inflammatory pigmentation scars
These are a response to the healing process after the inflammation caused by acne. They are caused by melanin excess and are common in Asian and dark skin.
-
Post-inflammatory Hypopigmentation scars
Opposite to the previous one, hypopigmentation is the loss of pigments to the surrounding area where the acne has healed.
-
Keloids scars
Different from the other scars, the keloids are raised scars that can grow much larger than the original injury. These can be occurred from different types of bruises and not only from acne.
Types of Acne Scar Treatments
At Solihull Medical Cosmetic Clinic, we offer a great range of acne scar treatments. These may vary accordingly to the type of skin and the type of scar, where each case will be individually discussed with Dr Sagoo and a combination of treatments may be required for better performance. They are:
-
Radiofrequency Micro-needling (Fractora Active for Acne)
Based on a radiofrequency treatment, the Fractora Active for acne is an ablative treatment that stimulates collagen production by causing micro-lesion to the skin. In addition to promoting under-skin repairs, it will also act as anti-ageing and help the skin to appear more youthful. The healing process for this treatment is very fast.
-
TCA CROSS technique
This technique is based on a trichloroacetic acid (TCA) that ablates the epithelial wall of the skin, promoting dermal remodelling and being very effective for ice-pick acne scars.
-
Medical Grade Subcision
This technique facilitates the release of scar tissue, enhancing collagen production and skin appearance by depressing the atrophic scar by cutting and releasing the threads that hold it in place. The Medical grade subcision is carried out by very few doctors in the UK, where Dr Sagoo is very skilled.
-
Invasive Punch Excision Technique
Perfect for ice-pick scars, this treatment uses a punch biopsy instrument to transform the indented scars into flat linear ones.
Also known as lasabrasion or laser peel, laser resurfacing is based on light beams that help remove layers of the skin, promoting collagen production and reducing the appearance of lines and scarring.
-
Steroid Injections
Great for keloids, corticosteroid injections in acne scar treatment help reduce their size by breaking the scar tissue, reducing swelling, and flattening it.
