What is a dermaroller and how does it work?

Roughly saying, a dermaroller is a small hand-held device that contains tens of tiny needles that roll over the skin. These needles can vary from 0.2mm to 2mm where each size will offer a different outcome of a procedure.

The smaller needles (0.2mm to 0.45mm) will help the skin to absorb products more easily, such as Vitamin C or Hyaluronic acid, while the bigger and medical-grade needles (from 0.5mm) are meant to stimulate collagen production once they injure and irritate the skin, helping to reduce small wrinkles, wounds, stretch marks and even skin tone.

Micro-needling shows considerable improvement with repeated treatment sessions and its effects may last up to a year. This treatment is extremely effective if used alone but can be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels or microdermabrasion for even greater results.

Why should you not use a dermaroller at home?

Even though buying your dermaroller and trying the procedures at home may be much cheaper, the risks it could raise may not be worth it as it can be very dangerous in the wrong hands.

Without proper sterilisation or a disposable item, dermarollers can harbour harmful bacteria that will penetrate the skin, being able to cause infections and breakouts and can trigger skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, melasma, and brown patches.

If you are unhappy with your ageing skin, or if you are looking to reduce the appearance of scars, pore sizes, or stretch marks, but don’t want to undergo invasive cosmetic surgery, a micro-needling may be a great solution, but make sure that for safety reasons and better results, you will look for a cosmetic professional.

At the Solihull Medical Cosmetic Clinic, Dr Victor Sago’s micro-needling treatments are safe and effective. Before treatment begins, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the desired area and the Dermaroller is then applied to the skin that needs to be repaired and restored with all safety requirements.
